Hello lovelies!! I wanted to share with you a super simple project or recreation of a vintage garment. I wanted to make it work for me, since I am not a tiny little lady like my grandmother was. The red pencil skirt pictured above is the piece I am talking about! It was once part of a Peck & Peck dress that belonged to my grandmother. Here’s where this skirt originated from:
This is what the dress looked like before I reconstructed it to work better for me. While the detailing is beautiful, and the dress itself is stunning, it would never work for me. Plus, there was small, sad little holes in the top portion of the dress. I couldn’t let this stunning piece go to waste, especially with the sentimental value attached to it.
First, I turned the dress inside out. Then I carefully used my seam ripper to remove a portion of the zipper on the back of the dress.
After determining how much of the zipper I wanted to detach (I just eyed it based on the length I was looking for), I pinned the bottom of the zipper up and cut just beneath it.
Next I created a waist line by folding the fabric and pinning where I wanted to sew.
I sewed along the waist line close to the bottom, so as to create a wide band. Since this material is very stretchy, I didn’t need to use elastic or anything to make it tighter. It also did come from a dress that was quite a few sizes too small for me. I sewed two stitches, within 1 – 2 cm of each other, just to make sure that the line was nice, clean, & sturdy.
Lastly, I decided to add a vintage style button to the back, just to keep the skirt better on my waist, or more secure.
That’s it! I now have an amazing vintage red pencil skirt, that once belonged to my grandmother. I couldn’t be happier.

awesome DIY….I am SO not that creative or talented. Sewing has always seemed like a foreign language to me, which is weird since I have worked fashion/retail my entire adult life.
