This mess was my closet before I recently decided it was time to change things up. I did a major purge and got rid of over 3 trash bags full of clothing, shoes & handbags. I stuck to the number one most common rule, “if you haven’t worn it in 6 months, you probably won’t any time soon, and it’s time for it to find a new home.” I am now much happier with my closet. After the purge I was able to consolidate my closet usage down to my closet & the closet in the guest room, which is good. I also gained TONS of closet space by changing one tiny little thing…my hangers!

These are just a few examples of what I used to use in my closet. Now, don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the wrapped hanger and the puffy floral fabric one with the pretty ribbon bow. They just aren’t practical if space is an issue. Instead, I switched 100 items in my closet over to these fabulous velvet hangers:
These are amazing hangers, and I totally recommend them to any of you having closet space issues. I scored 100 hangers on amazon for $50. I know these sell for over $20 in stores for 25 hangers. You can (& should!!) buy them here. They are covered in this awesome non-slip velvet material that seriously grip on all items. I have lace, silk, satin, chunky sweaters, thin tops, wide necks, etc…all of them have become best friends with this hanger. Check them out close up!

See all of that fabulous velvet love? Amazingness in a thin little hanger. My entire closet it not yet complete, but here’s a semi after picture of the different in my closet after only changing out 100 hangers:

Can you see the difference? My clothes are hung neater, they lie nicer, and are more wrinkle free than ever. Believe it or not, these are all of my clothes, minus my coats & jackets.
Sorry for the lack of quality in these photos. My camera is currently being used to photograph the ballet, so these were shot with my iPhone.

Your closet definitely looks more spacious! I am constantly trying to reorganize my wardrobe. It’s a little overwhelming, but fun! I love going through all my stuff.
can i get the red pumps please…..lol,you did a good job.

I seriously have to do this for my closet, have been meaning to properly organise since we moved in to the new place – been 7 months! Eek! Downsizing hangers is such an obvious thing, which I did too when we moved, but I simply have too much clothing at the moment and really hate to throw it or charity shop it, so plan to store some then switch over in a few months, so it will feel like new stuff all the time. Hopefully that will work! lol Good luck finishing the closet! And I cannot believ how high some of your heels are!

wow!!! Your wardrobe is sooooooo much neater thank mine!
Excellent post Kirsten! Hangers make a world of difference. I try to buy the same kind. Loved the ones you got and what a fabulous price. Because hangers are expensive. I’m so good at purging clothes, now i have some to sell. Have you thought about selling yours? I’m taking pics of mine, accessories etc. and will be selling them on my blog. Just a thought! Have a great day!

I love your closet! I have two closets in my room and they don’t look half as nice as yours. I actually converted to velvet hangers about a year ago…I love them so much. Great post!

There is nothing so cathartic as a closet purge!
But then shopping is cathartic…
An endless cycle I suppose.
Nice! I need to do some spring cleaning myself. I really want those velvet hangers, I saw them at Home Goods. But I don’t know what I would do with all my plastic hangers (seems wasteful). That is the best rule to follow because otherwise we make excuses that “some day I’ll wear it” but we never do
hey love! just wanted to let you know that you can add a new pair of shoes to your closet! stop by my blog to see why!!
I recently did a closet purge myself! It felt so good-now I need to invest in some of those fab hangers! Your closet looks great

What Lola Wants
Your closet looks amazing and you have a wonderful shoe collection. I recently did this and purging was the best feeling. Well, next to organizing my clothes because I used to believe that my floor was basically on par with a closet.
Your closet looks fab! And I absolutely swear by thin hangers – I just switched out a bunch of mine, too, and I can’t get over the space they saved. Plus, clothes stay on them so well, which is a bonus.
Also, your shooooes! I love how you have them on the shelf!
i did a post on organizing the closet, and these hangers are a must-have for me.
You did great! I desperately need to organize mine.

Ah, that’s awesome! I am also purging my clothing as well in the form of a garage sale within the next two days! I’m so excited, and I can’t wait to do a blog post about it too as well as my closet that will be a lot less cluttered.
Also, my friend brought over these hangers (the velvet ones) to use, and I agree they are fabulous! I might have to get some of my own!
i need to do something like this. my hangers are primarily old dry cleaners hangers which is NOT good for my clothing and they are also bent and mishaped a lot of the time
i love all the colro in your closet!
Do you know how long it has been since I revamped my closet? I can’t even remember the last time. I tend to hoard stuff because I am convinced I will wear it at some point — and sometimes I do. Most of the time, I don’t. Fail. Mr. A finally had to get his own closet in the house because my stuff was eating his.

My closet could definitely use a clean up, I must admit I’m a bit of a hoarder when it comes to clothes, I can never seem to let them go!! I have those same hangers, love them!

i do like those black hangers and i can actually see a difference in your closet. i recently fixed up my closet as well, but i do think i still need to get rid of a few things. running out of hangers too!
I really need to do this as well, but I tend to hoard things since I can always randomly use something for styling. I try to separate things though since I have two closets and a rolling rack in my office.
I need to follow your example.
it’s really nice to change every now and then! i need to go through my closet as well!
Sounds like it’s that season of purging amongst many of my friends. Glad that you found the velvet hangers, I pack a few of these with me, they are great! Those red shoes look fabulous!
That iPhone is a godsend isn’t it! -xo
I just purged my closet too! and bought a ton of hangers. I wish I would’ve gotten velvet ones, but I wanted instant gratification, so I just bought cheap black hangers instead.

I am so impressed! My closet is in need a serious re-org!
I saw the title and had to come and take a peek. I’m gonna put my shoes the way you have them. Thnx for the inspiration.
Love those hangers. I switched over to those slim velvet ones about a year or two ago and couldn’t be happier. I could use some more though, and another closet cleanup!
I’m so proud of your for cleaning out your closet! Is that color organizing I see? My closet is done the same way! Except yours is way more colorful, mine looks like a sad rainbow.
Fabbb!! I love this!!!
