Last weekend my dad & I went to the Bon Festival at Morikami Park in West Palm Beach. The Bon or Obon (in Japanese) is a traditional Japanese custom that signifies a time when the spirits of deceased family members are believed to return to the world of the living for a brief visit.
“Obon is a joyous as well as solemn occasion, serving to honor ancestors and thank them for contributing to the quality of life enjoyed by the living. On the last night of Obon, the ancestors are believed to depart for the otherworld, their journey illuminated by farewell fires. In many communities these take the form of simple paper lanterns floated on bodies of water. Families who have experienced deaths in the past year may float elaborately decorated boats to transport their recently deceased to the other side for the first time. In Japan, the otherworld is traditionally regarded as lying beyond the sea or mountains.” - Excerpt from the Morikami Website
Despite the heat, it was actually a really beautiful day, and a beautiful, moving event. We were able to escape from the heat, and went into the little shop area, where I picked up this really pretty yellow fan. A big thank you to my dad for taking my pictures!!
I really loved the traditional Japanese fashions they had for sale. Gorgeous silk & satin kimono’s, jackets, shoes, purses. I snapped this little statue of a kimono, before the gorgeous silk ones caught my eye.
I really fell in love with the print on this one. I love the beautiful woman, with the flowers and the traditional writing.
The shape of this bag was just intriguing. I had really pretty swirly handles, too. I love the vibrant orange beads towards the bottom of the bag.
We took so many pictures at the festival. I plan on sharing quite a few more with you, so keep an eye out for part two!!

What a beautiful festival, and you look fab as always! Kudos to your dad for taking some great photos.
LOVE the kimonos!

I love kimonos. I only had one (as a kid) but I loved getting wrapped, layer by layer. I also loved walking on geta!

Cool! Love that red kimono too. When I was in England, I saw a few of those lanterns floating through the air (it’s getting popular there- but not with the farmers!) The ones you saw were floated on water though?
Ooh, I actually have a kimono that my Mom brought back from the Philippines where she lived as a kid. I should bring it out for an outfit!
I love the dress! It looks perfect for walking around a festival.
Love your outfit and accessories! And looks like you’re having a great time at the festival! xx
